Rudy's
History
Rudy's Beau Rivage well justifies its name by offering a splendid panoramic
view of the majestic Hudson. Its heritage is a chapter in American
History. It begins in 1609 when Hendrick Hudson sailed his Half
Moon up the river that was soon to take his name. A century later
Jeremiah Dobbs rowed people across to the west bank establishing
“Dobbs” Ferry. A motor launch in this century, the ferry plied
its trade until 1939.
Several
notable events took place in vicinity of Beau Rivage during the
Revolution. Across the street (King’s Highway) at Washington’s
Headquarters plans were made for the battle of Yorktown and later
for the evacuation of the British Army from New York. In the
1800’s, activities in the river changed complexion from sail to
steam following the voyage of Robert Fulton’s steamboat in 1807. Then
in the 1900’s the highways witnessed a turn from horse to motor
for their transportation. Local historians are not clear about
the consruction date of the handsome brick structure housing Beau Rivage.
Rudy's Beau Rivage is believed to be about 150 years old. Several prominent
Dobbs Ferryites have been resident, namely the families of Dr.
James H. Pooley, the community’s first president in 1873. J.
F. Oakley and at the turn of the century. Joseph Middlebrook,
famed international lawyer.
A
commercial era followed after World War I with the arrival of
the Abrams family from Texas. The stately house was given a new
façade with distinctive columns, renovated for a restaurant, and
called the Dixie Inn. From 1958 to 1968, it became Villa Arturo.
Then from February 1969 to date, new ownership changed to a name
more in keeping with history and location - Rudy's Beau Rivage.
Extensive remodeling was done which added Banquet facilities.
RUDY’s has, from the very beginning, prided itself with fine food,
great service and an outstanding atmosphere.
